What is Middle Session?

In Dr. Tinari's virtual mailbag she explained:
"Intersessions are not new. Many of you may have engaged in them in high school or college for a two or three- week period between terms, enrolling in courses that were interdisciplinary, revolved around a theme or were not available in the regularcourse catalog.   MiddleSession expands on the traditional intersession, emphasizing 21st century skills in ways of thinking (creativity and innovation, critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making), ways of working (communication and collaboration), tools for learning (information and ICT literacy), and living in the world (local and global citizenship and personal and social responsibility).

We began structuring the program in early fall with the goal of engaging the girls in a unique learning opportunity, one built around central themes and concepts common to the subjects in each grade as well as the homeroom/advisory program  - change over time, sustainability (environmental, social, individual), creating organizations to serve communities and conflict and the responsible use of power.  We will offer experiences not possible within the usual constraints of schedule and setting – field trips, speakers (both on-site and via Skype), simulations, performances and debate. In addition to their standing teaching schedule, regular duties and prepping for the existing curriculum, each grade’s team of advisors has been meeting weekly since November to plan MiddleSession.  It has been challenging but joyfully engaging work and, from my perspective, so exciting to watch the program evolve and take shape!  We are looking forward to sharing it with you at Inside MiddleSession."

You can find more information about how Middle Session has developed in 6th grade by viewing the pages for adults and students under the "Middle Session" tab.

Thank you and we look forward to sharing this experience with you.

Fondly,

The 6th Grade Advising Team
